Description
The Earthworks SR20 brings studio-grade accuracy to live sound reinforcement, built around an electret condenser capsule with a precisely engineered cardioid polar pattern. Its true selling point is off-axis consistency: Earthworks’ patented cardioid design keeps the front hemisphere response remarkably even, staying flatter at 90 degrees than most competitors manage on-axis. That translates to cleaner rejection of monitor spill and room ambiance, and more usable gain before feedback creeps in.
Vocals stay intelligible and natural whether a singer is dead-center or working the edges of the pattern, and the SR20 avoids the boomy proximity effect common to close-mic’d performances — warmth without mud. Its windscreen assembly is also designed to tame plosive pops. Remove that windscreen, though, and the mic’s response widens for broader pickup, suited to background vocalists, choirs, or ensemble sources.
With a maximum SPL rating of 145dB, the SR20 doesn’t flinch at loud sources, making it a solid pick for close-micing instruments too — piano, acoustic guitar, drums, brass, and woodwinds all benefit from its detail retrieval and low coloration.
