Description
The AT4040 is Audio-Technica’s answer to demanding studio sessions where transparency and low noise aren’t optional. Its large-diaphragm cardioid capsule stays focused on the source directly in front of it, rejecting off-axis spill from the room, other players, or nearby gear — which makes it a dependable choice for vocals, acoustic guitar, piano, and other string instruments where a clean, detailed capture matters.
- Cardioid Directionality: The tight cardioid pattern keeps ambient noise and bleed to a minimum, so what you record is mostly the source, not the space around it.
- Gold-Plated Element, Nickel-Plated Baffle: The capsule and brass baffle are built for accuracy, delivering a notably quiet noise floor without sacrificing detail.
- Transformerless Design: Removing the transformer from the signal path further lowers noise and helps the mic stay honest with transients and presence.
- Switchable 80 Hz High-Pass Filter: Flip between a flat response and a low-end roll-off on the fly — useful for taming plosives on close vocal work or filtering out traffic rumble, HVAC hum, and floor-borne vibration during tracking.
It ships with Audio-Technica’s AT8449 spring-loaded shock mount, which isolates the capsule from stand and handling noise so nothing but the performance makes it to the mix. Whether it’s anchoring a vocal booth or capturing acoustic instruments in a live room, the AT4040 is built to hold up under repeated studio use.
