Description
The Heil PR 22 pushes dynamic microphone design well past decades-old industry norms, delivering a wide frequency response, exceptional SPL handling up to +140dB, and a level of clarity rarely found in this mic category. It’s equally at home on a live vocal, tracking a snare drum, or capturing guitar cabinets in the studio.
What sets the PR 22 apart is its articulate upper-midrange presence, which makes vocals cut through a mix without harshness. Heil’s decades of experience engineering communications microphones (since 1982) shows in the mic’s phase coherence and linear cardioid pickup pattern, offering up to 40dB of rear rejection to keep off-axis noise out. There’s no exaggerated proximity effect or awkward hot spot in the pattern – just consistent, natural response.
Inside, a large 1-1/8″ low-mass diaphragm pairs with a neodymium-iron-boron magnet structure, among the strongest available in a dynamic capsule, for fast transient response and detail. Handling noise, typically an issue in the 50-100Hz range, is addressed through Heil’s ISO BAND suspension system using Sorbothane rubber. Rather than cutting off low frequencies below 125Hz like many ball-style dynamics (sacrificing warmth in the process), the PR 22 retains a full 50Hz to 18kHz range while staying quiet in the hand.
With SPL handling approaching 150dB, this mic is equally suited to loud stage sources and demanding studio sessions.
