Description
The Great River ME-1NV takes cues from classic 1970s British console preamps and rebuilds them with modern precision. Housed in a compact half-rack 1U chassis with its own internal linear power supply, it pairs two discrete Class-A gain stages with custom Sowter transformers on both input and output, giving you that sought-after “big iron” harmonic character without sacrificing headroom or clarity.
Up to 70dB of gain is on tap, and Great River’s dual gain-stage metering lets you watch input and output levels independently as you dial things in—a level of visual feedback few single-channel preamps offer. A front-panel DI input runs Hi-Z sources through a FET buffer directly into the input transformer, making this an excellent choice for bass, guitar, and line-level instrument sources, not just microphones.
Flexibility runs throughout the design: switchable input impedance and output loading let you reshape the preamp’s response to suit different mics and sources, an unbalanced insert point opens the door to outboard processing, and both balanced and unbalanced line outputs mean no-latency monitoring is easy to set up alongside your DAW.
