Description
The Telefunken M81 rounds out the brand’s dynamic mic lineup, built as a companion to the popular M80 rather than a replacement. It shares the M80’s low proximity effect, strong feedback rejection, and articulate midrange, but dials back the high end for a flatter, more even frequency response overall.
That tonal shift gives the M81 a fuller, weightier character — useful for smoothing out brighter vocals and edgy guitar tones, and equally good at adding body to percussion, horns, and other sources that need thickening up. Its tailored response also makes it a strong choice on electric guitar cabinets, rack and floor toms, and brass, whether you’re tracking in the studio or running it on a stage.
Visually, the M81 carries the flint gray body and tri-chrome grille of Telefunken’s R-F-T AR-51, and the resemblance isn’t just cosmetic — the M81’s response was voiced to pair naturally with the AR-51 on guitar amp setups. On its own, though, it’s built to be a true generalist, equally at home wherever a dynamic mic is called for.
