Heil Sound built the PR 22 to close the gap between road-worthy dynamic mics and studio-quality tone. Drawing on decades of communications microphone engineering, Heil applied its phase-coherence expertise to craft a true linear cardioid pattern with up to 40 dB of rear rejection, keeping off-axis stage noise and bleed out of the signal without introducing a harsh proximity effect or hot spot.
At the heart of the PR 22 is a large 1-1/8″ low-mass diaphragm paired with a neodymium-iron-boron magnet structure — among the strongest available in a dynamic capsule. This combination gives the mic a wide, extended frequency response and the dynamic range to sit comfortably in front of a snare, guitar cab, or a vocalist working the mic hard on a loud stage. SPL handling reaches nearly 150 dB, so distortion isn’t a concern even at extreme volumes.
Most dynamic mics tame handling noise by rolling off everything below 125Hz, sacrificing low-end warmth in the process. The PR 22 avoids that trade-off with Heil’s ISO BAND suspension — a Sorbothane rubber mounting system (patent pending) that mechanically isolates the capsule, allowing the mic to retain response down to 50Hz while still keeping handling noise under control.
The result is a dynamic microphone equally at home as a lead vocal mic on a loud stage, a snare or instrument mic in a live rig, or a characterful option in the recording studio.
