The Telefunken M80 was engineered as a step up from the typical workhorse vocal dynamic, aiming to close the gap between rugged live-mic reliability and the nuanced detail usually associated with condensers. Its supercardioid pattern and extended frequency range give it a broader, more open voice than most dynamics in its class, making it equally at home behind a monitor wedge or in front of a studio preamp.
At the heart of the M80 sits a low-mass capsule with an unusually thin membrane, which lets it track the subtle dynamics of a live vocal with a sense of intimacy rarely found outside condenser territory. The head and capsule geometry were tuned specifically to tame proximity effect, so low-end buildup stays under control while the mic retains a confident, airy top end — without tipping into harsh upper-midrange feedback issues on loud stages.
Driving the sound is an American-made, custom-wound TELEFUNKEN T80 impedance-matching transformer, paired with the proprietary capsule design, a combination that’s earned the M80 a strong following since launch.
Physically, the mic is finished in a durable black powder-coated body topped with a chrome-plated headgrille, built to survive nightly load-in and load-out.
